Blog sale coming up!

Pari viimeisintä kommenttia tässä blogissa ovat saaneet minut innostumaan blogikirppiksestä ihan kunnolla! Olenkin siis miettinyt tänään kovasti, että mitenhän sen toteuttaisi ja mitä siellä tulisi olemaan. Tässä on pieni vilaus siihen, mitä merkkejä blogikirppiksestä ainakin tulee löytymään. Postituksen lisäksi myös nouto kaikille tavaroille on sovittavissa Suomesta (pääkaupunkiseutu) tai Manhattan/Long Island-alueelta, sillä seilaan kuitenkin mantereiden välillä tänä keväänä. Palataan tähän blogikirppikseen mahdollisimman pian!

The last few comments on my blog have really made me excited about planning a blog sale! So, today I have been thinking about how to make it work and what would I sell there. Here is a little sneak peek to what there will be at least. I can mail the products, but also even picking them up from the city area in Finland or from Manhattan/Long Island is possible, because I will be traveling the two continents this spring a lot. I'll get back to this blog sale as soon as possible!

Manhattan Tips: Pier 66 Maritime

Yksi kiva paikka kesällä illanviettoon Manhattanilla on Pier 66 Maritime. Se ravintola-baarina toimiva laiturialue, johon kuuluu lisäksi kaksi historiallista laivaa. Tunnelma on todella rento ja näkymä Hudson-joen yli auringonlaskun aikaan on upea! Olen käynyt täällä pari kertaa ja aina on ollut kivaa! Kannattaa kuitenkin tulla tänne aikaisin, jos haluaa saada hyvän pöydän kauniilla näkymällä! Kuvan alla on tarkka osoite.

One nice place to spend an evening in Manhattan in summer is Pier 66 Maritime. It is a pier and two historic ships that have been turned into a restaurant/bar. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the view over Hudson river at sunset is breathtaking! I have been here few times and always had an amazing time! I suggest you arrive early if you want to get a nice table with the best view! Below the picture is the address.

Have some coffee!

Muistatteko, kun pari viikkoa sitten kerroin innoissani James Gulliver Hancockin yrityksestä piirtää kaikki New Yorkin rakennukset? (Täältä voit lukea lisää). Seinille olisi kiva saada lisää tauluja, joten olen tutkinut muitakin vaihtoehtoja. Toinen suosikkini on Deborah Velasquez, jonka tunnettu työ "coffee is always a good idea" on munkin yksi lemppareista ja sopisi hyvin keittiöön. Pidän julisteita enemmän kuin maalauksista. Tuleeko teillä mieleen muita mielenkiintoisia taiteilijoita tai hauskoja julisteita?

Remember when couple weeks ago I told about James Gulliver Hancock and his attempt of drawing all the buildings in New York? (Click here to read more). Would be nice to have some more art on the walls, so I've been doing some research. Deborah Velasquez, whose "coffee is always a good idea" is one of my favorites too and would look good in the kitchen. I like posters more than paintings. Can you tell me any other interesting artists or funny posters?

Going to Spain

Olen innoissani kertoessani, että parin viikon päästä lähdemme lomalle Espanjaan! Ensin muutama päivä Barcelonassa, josta matkustamme loppuajaksi Madridiin - viikko yhteensä. Nämä kaupungit eivät ole kummallekaan meistä aiemmin tuttuja, joten jos olet Espanja-ekspertti, niin vinkkejä nähtävyyksistä, ravintoloista ja kaikesta muusta otetaan mielellään vastaan!

I'm so excited to tell you that in a few weeks we will go on a holiday to Spain! First few days in Barcelona, and from there we will travel to Madrid - one week total. We don't know either of these cities, so if you know Spain, let us know your tips about sightseeing, restaurants and everything else!

Tuli muuten mieleeni, että missä nykyään on hyviä kirpputoreja Helsingissä nyt kun Valtteri ei ilmeisesti ole enää toiminnassa? Tarkoituksenani on keväällä myydä Suomessa vaatteita, laukkuja ja astioita, jotta on taas vähemmän tavaraa kuljetettavana Jenkkeihin... :)

Btw, where are the good flea markets in Helsinki now that Valtteri isn't running anymore? I want to sell some clothes, bags and dishes in Finland this spring, so that I have less stuff to ship to USA again... :)

The Oscars - red carpet 2013

Meillä seurattiin eilen Oscareita, ja varsinkin sitä punaista mattoa. Aika ihania pukuja oli, eikä mun mielestä yhtäkään ihan "hirvitystä". Poimin tähän muutamia mun pukusuosikkeja:

Lusikkaleipiä

Leivoin ensimmäistä kertaa lusikkaleipiä mummon antaman ohjeen mukaan. En ymmärrä, miksi en ole tehnyt näitä aikaisemminkin, sillä se oli todella helppoa ja nopeaa! Mummon reseptistä poiketen tein keksit ruokalusikalla enkä teelusikalla, joten niistä tuli tuplasti isompia. Nyt pitäisi vain laittaa hilloa/marmeladia kahden keksin väliin ja vähän tomusokeria pinnalle. Nam!

For the first time I baked some "spoon breads" (butter cookies). I can't understand why I haven't baked these before too, because it was fast and easy! Unlike in my grandma's recipe, I did these with a tablespoon instead of a teaspoon, so they are double the size. Now I should just put some jam/marmalade between two cookies, and a little bit of powdered sugar as decoration. Yum!

Cliff's Elbow Room

Parasta ruokaa mun kokemukseni mukaan täällä Jenkeissä saa pienistä perheravintoloista, jotka eivät ole ulkonäöltään mitenkään huomiota herättäviä. Yksi sellainen on Cliff's Elbow Room Jamesportissa, jossa kävimme eilen syömässä. Tämä oli minulle ensimmäinen kerta kyseisessä ravintolassa, mutta olin kuullut jo useasti hyvää heidän pihveistä. Pakkohan se oli testata! En tosin osannut odottaa yhtään sellaista mitä tulin näkemään; pihvin koko oli isoin mitä olen ikinä nähnyt! Mitenköhän voisin paremmin kuvailla sitä? hmm... Siis niin iso, että siitä söisi ainakin kaksi ihmistä itsensä aivan täyteen! Pinta oli ihanan rapeaksi käristetty ja sisäosa oli mehukas. Nam! Lihansyöjän paratiisi! 

Tottakai suosittelen tätä paikkaa Long Islandilla vieraileville, jotka haluavat syödä hyviä pihvejä. Ne  olivat vain jotain niin erilaista kuin muissa ravintoloissa. Jälkiruokana nauttimamme kakku harmiksemme maistui aika kaupasta ostetulta - kuitenkin mielestäni pihvit ovat se pääasia kun tänne mennään syömään, joten pitäydy niissä kun käyt täällä! :)

Best food in my opinion in the States you get from small family-owned restaurants, which maybe not have any eye-catching facade. One of those is Cliff's Elbow Room in Jamesport, where we went to eat yesterday. This was the first time for me in that restaurant, but I have heard a lot of good things about their steaks. Of course I had to try! And I couldn't even imagine what I was about to see; the size of the steak was huge! How could I describe it better? hmm... It was so big that two people could easily share it and be super full! The surface was nice and crispy and the inside was juicy. Yum! Meat eater's paradise! 

Of course I recommend this place to people who visit Long Island and want to eat good steaks. The steaks there are just so different than in other places. The cake that we had for dessert tasted very much like factory-made - but I still think the steaks are in main part when you come here to eat, so stick in those! :)

Instagramia seurailevat ovatkin jo nähneet tämän kuvan, mutta mun oli pakko lisätä se tännekin, sillä se saa mut aina hymyilemään leveästi. Mistä lähtien koirat ovat rakastaneet saunassa käyntiä?? Tässä kuvassa poseeraa vanhempieni luona asuva Mindy-koira, joka on ihan sauna-hullu! Sitä ei meinaisi saada alas lauteilta ikinä, kun se niin nauttii lämmöstä. Chihut tulevatkin alunperin Meksikosta, joten olisiko tällä jotain tekemistä sen kanssa, että ne viihtyvät kuumassa ja vihaavat talvea? Onko kukaan teistä ikinä törmännyt sauna-koiriin? Haha!

Those who follow me on Instagram have seen this picture already, but I decided to add it here too because it makes me smile every time I see it. Since when have dogs loved to go to sauna?? Mindy-dog who lives at my parent's house is posing in this picture and she just loves going to sauna! It's almost impossible to get her out of there! Chihuahuas are originally from Mexico, so could this be an explanation why they love the heat and hate winter? Has anyone of you ever seen sauna-dogs? Haha!

Love the UGGs!

Olen alkusyksystä asti pyöritellyt eri kaupoissa konjakin värisiä nahkahanskoja, mutta nyt vasta löysin ne ihan täydelliset. Vaikka ne onkin UGGin, niin niiden hinta oli silti niin edullinen etten voinut jättää niitä hyllyyn. Olen tosi tyytyväinen, sillä aiemmin olin miettinyt hennesistä samantyylisiä hanskoja - lähes samalla hinnalla! Olen varma, että nämä ovat tosi hyvälaatuiset ja tulevat pysymään minulla vuosia.

Since early fall, I have been looking for some nice cognac-colored gloves and happened to find the perfect ones yesterday. Although they are UGG, they still weren't that expensive, so I just couldn't leave them in the shop. I am very happy, because previously I have been looking at similar kind of gloves at H&M - with almost the same price... I am sure, that these are very good quality and will stay with me for years!  

Mukaan tarttui myös nämä! Suomessa asuessani jotenkin vierastin korvaläppiä, mutta täällä olen oppinut pitämään niistä todella paljon ja mielestäni nämä ovat tosi söpöt (ja lämpöiset!). Jotenkin mulla tulee näistä kyllä Snooki mieleen, varmaan kultaisten paljettien takia, hehe!

I also bought these! When I was living in Finland, I wasn't really a fan of ear muffs, but here I have learned to like them very much and I think these are very cute (and warm!). For some reason they remind me of Snooki, maybe because of the golden sequins, hehe!

Thinking of buying Converse shoes?

Olen saanut muutaman kysymyksen siitä, mistä ostan täällä New Yorkissa Converse-kenkäni. Manhattanilla suurimmassa osassa liikkeitä hinnat saattavat olla aika Suomen tasolla, joten miksi kukaan jaksaisi roudata consseja niillä hinnoilla Atlantin yli? Itse suosin Tanger-outleteja Riverheadissa, Long Islandilla. Vaikka tämä outlet-alue on aika levottoman kaukana Manhattanilta, sinne kuitenkin pääsee päivittäin bussilla (joko Manhattanilta tai Queensista). Siellä on myös paljon eri liikkeitä laidasta laitaan Converse-storen lisäksi, joten kannattaa varata shoppailuun koko päivä! Muita liikkeitä siellä ovat mm. Victoria's Secret, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Banana Republic, Calvin Klein, Juicy Couture... Enjoy! ;)

I have had few questions of where to buy Converse-shoes here in New York. Many places in Manhattan have the same prices as in Finland, so why would anyone bother carrying them to the other side of the Atlantic? I prefer using Tanger-outlets in Riverhead, Long Island. Although this outlet-area is quite far away from Manhattan, there is still a daily shuttle from Manhattan or Queens. Tanger also has so many different stores, that I recommend to book the whole day for this! Other stores are for example Victoria's Secret, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Banana Republic, Calvin Klein, Juicy Couture... Enjoy! ;)

Antakaas kun näytän teille jotain hassua, mutta erittäin herkullista! Panera lasketaan varmaan pikaruokapaikkoihin, mutta se on mielestäni yksi parhaimmista fast foodia tarjoavista ketjuravintoloista. Tarjolla on paljon erilaisia leipiä, salaatteja, keittoja yms. Tämä yksi on kuitenkin jotain ihan naurettavan hyvää; cheddar-broccoli-keitto tarjoiltuna rapeakuorisesta leipäkulhosta. Sanat eivät pysty kuvailemaan kuinka hyvää se on! Kannattaa kokeilla! ;)

Let me show you something really funny, but delicious! Panera might be categorized as a fast food restaurant, but I think it's one of the best places that offer these kind of food. There are many different breads, salads, soups etc. This one thing is still just ridiculously delicious; cheddar-broccoli soup offered in a crusty bread bowl. Words cannot describe how good this is! Just try it! ;)

This week

Tämä viikko on ollut aika rauhallinen ja olen viettänyt aika paljon aikaa kotona Mia-koiran kanssa. Hän haluaisi vain leikkiä koko ajan, kuvassakin tarjoaa mulle luuta heitettäväksi! :) Alkuviikosta ostin Dunkin Donutsin keskipaahtoista kahvia. Perus-kahvi on täällä yllättävän kallista (verrattuna suomalaisiin merkkeihin), mutta pikakahvia saisi halvalla, se ei kuitenkaan oikein maistu. Lempparini kahveista täällä tähän mennessä on Starbucksin maustamaton joulusekoitus, harmi ettei sitä saa enää helmikuussa ostettua... Eilen muuten mentiin pieniin kotibileisiin. Jokaisen piti tuoda jotain syötävää/juotavaa, joten mä päätin leipoa mokkapaloja. Kukaan ei ole täällä ennen maistanut niitä, mutta hyvin näyttivät uppoovan ja kaikki tykkäsivät! ;)

This week has been quite calm and I have been spending quite much time at home with Mia-dog. She would just like to play all the time, and in the picture she's offering me her bone so that I could throw it! :) In the beginning of this week I bought medium roast Dunkin Donuts coffee. Basic coffee is quite expensive here (when comparing the price to basic Finnish brands), but one could buy cheap instant coffee, on the other hand I don't like that at all. My favorite coffee here so far has been the non-flavored Starbucks Christmas coffee, too bad it's not possible to buy it on February... Btw, yesterday we went to a small house party. Everyone had to bring something to eat/drink, so I decided to bake coffee flavored brownie-cakes. No-one has ever tried those here, but everyone seemed to like them! ;)

Vanderpump Rules

Niin kuin Suomessa, täälläkin seurataan näitä tosi-tv-ohjelmia kotirouvista yms. Onko Suomessa kuitenkaan alkanut pyörimään vielä Vanderpump Rules? Mä olen ihan koukussa siihen! Ohjelma kertoo Lisa Vanderpumpin (Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) omistaman ravintolan henkilökunnan armottomasta draamailusta. Suosittelen kaikille, jotka tykkäävät turhasta/turhamaisesta realitystä, haha!

Like in Finland, here the reality shows about housewives are very popular. But is Vanderpump Rules running in Finland yet? I'm so hooked on it! The show is about Lisa Vanderpump's (Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) restaurant staff, ruthless drama. I recommend this to everyone who likes vain reality shows, haha!

Waffle time

Mä unohdin ihan täysin laskiaisen ja laskiaispullat! Onneksi tänään tehtiin aamulla herkullisia vohveleita, joten ne käy pullan korvikkeena. Ja muuten asiasta ihan toiseen; viimepostauksessa juuri kerroin kuinka ystävänpäivä-jutuilta ei pysty välttymään täällä. Eilen käviessäni ruokakaupassa tajusin, että kaikki ystävänpäivään liittyvät karkit, suklaat ja muut konvehdit ovat loppu. Ja nyt ei puhuta mistään pikkuisesta karkkihyllystä, vaan pitkästä vaan valtavasta käytävästä. En siis saanut pinkkejä M&M-karkkeja, mutta kyllä mä keksin vielä jotain muuta :)

I totally forgot to bake shrove buns! Luckily this morning we had some yummy waffles, so they will work as a substitute. Oh and by the way, in the last post I wrote how it is impossible to avoid Valentine's day here. Well, yesterday when I went to do some groceries, I realized that all the sweets and chocolate related to vd were sold out. And now I'm not talking about a little shelf of sweets, I mean the whole aisle! Because of that I didn't get my pink M&M's, but I'll figure out something else :)

Valentine's Day

Onko siellä jo suunniteltu torstain ystävänpäivää? Olen huomannut, että täällä ovat vaaleanpunaiset tavarat hiipineet kauppoihin pikkuhiljaa vuoden vaihteesta lähtien ja nyt niiltä ei voi enää välttyä. Olisi mukava viettää ystävänpäivää överisti jenkki-tyyliin nyt kun siihen on mahdollisuus, mutta Josh on töissä silloin ilta ysiin asti, joten pitää miettiä. En tiedä oikein miten se Suomessa on, mutta täällä ainakin ravintolat ovat ihan täynnä Valentine's daynä! Ehkä mä voisin kuitenkin leipoa kuvassa olevia söpöjä vaaleanpunaisia M&M-keksejä! :)

Have you started planning Valentine's day? I have noticed that you can't really avoid the pink products when going to shops, it's everywhere! Would be nice to spend Valentine's day the real American style now that I have a chance for it, but Josh will be working till 9pm... I don't really know how it goes in Finland, but here all the restaurants will be packed on next Thursday. Maybe I could still bake these cute pink M&M-cookies! :)

Vaikka Nemo-myrskyn takia jouduttiinkin perumaan monia näytöksiä muotiviikoilla, on tässä kaupungissa silti vielä paljon tapahtumaa. Although Nemo-storm made many designers cancel their shows on fashion week, there is still lots of events in this city. Here is one example - if you happen to be around, go support Finnish design and fashion, in this pop-up store. Next Wednesday is also their opening party where you can meet the designers! Realove

Vuoden vaihteessa huomasin, ettei mulla ole kuin mustia korkokenkiä. Ihan kuin Steve Madden olisi lukenut ajatukseni ja postasi Facebookiin kuvan upeista Realove-kengistä ihanissa väreissä! Tässä on mun ensi kesän kengät! Sitten vain väriä miettimään... Keltainen olisi ihan täydellinen väri jos jalat olisivat kivasti päivettyneet, mutta mikä väri olisi meille, jotka vain auringossa heijastavat valoa muihin ja pysyvät ikuisesti kalkkilaivan kapteeneina? Onko siellä muita, jotka ihastuivat näihin kenkiin??

Now, these are the ones that I need to have for next summer! So which color? Yellow would be perfect for those who have tanned legs, me on the other hand stay white all the time and don't get any color on my skin. What would be the color for lighter skin tone? Is there anyone else who fell in love with these heels??

So much snow!

Tältä näytti eilen aamulla kun avasimme verhot Nemo-myrskyn jälkeen. Lumimäärästä tuli kotoisa Suomi mieleen, mutta pikkueroilla; olimme tuhansien muiden tavoin jumissa kotonamme. Ei auttanut muu kuin ryhtyä lumitöihin, sillä kaksi autoamme olivat täysin hautautuneina pihalla ja jonkun täytyi vielä lähteä töihin. Kuusi tuntia lapioituamme ja leikittyämme lumilingolla aura-autokin pääsi puhdistamaan kotikatumme. Vihdoin myös se odotettu tekstarikin tuli, ettei töihin ole menemistä tänään. Hyvä, sillä täällä on edelleen yleinen hätätila päällä ja ihmiset ajavat kesärenkailla! Meillä on täällä kotona kaikki kuitenkin paremmin kuin hyvin, vaikka toisen auton tuulilasi hajosi myrskyssä, mutta sähköt pysyivät ja Sandystä viisastuneena "preppauskin" onnistui hyvin, joten ruokaa yms. löytyy! Kaikista myrskyn huonoista puolista huolimatta, ulkona näyttää todella nätiltä ja valoisalta. Aurinko paistaa ja ainakin muutamat seuraavat päivät pitäisi lämpötilan pysyä plussan puolella, odotellaan lumen sulamista! :)

This is what it looked like yesterday after Nemo-storm. I felt very cozy because the amount of snow reminded me of Finland, but there were some differences; we were snowed in like thousands of other people. So, for the next six hours we used shovels and snowblower to set us and our two cars free, because someone still had to go to work. Finally, the plow truck was able to clean our home street and the long waited text message also came "no work today". New York is still under state of emergency and people are driving with summer wheels in their cars. Nevertheless, we are doing better than good, although the storm broke a windshield from another car of us. We still have power, and seeing Sandy-storm, we did good with "prepping" too, so we have enough food etc. Despite of all the bad things of Nemo, it looks very beautiful and bright outside! The sun is shining and at least for the next few days the temperature should stay above +0c, so we're waiting for the snow to melt! :) 

So, what happened yesterday?

Nyt kun on saatu muutama lempparivaate esiteltyä eilisestä muotinäytöksestä, voin varmaan siirtyä siihen itse illan kulkuun. Koin yllätyksen heti alkuun saapuessani aulaan kun Heidi Klum astui iloisena ulos hissistä ja heitti vitsiä paikalla olleille. Hän oli todella nättinä valkoisessa kauluspaidassa, jossa oli kultaisia niittejä. Hassua ajatella, että seisoin hänen vieressä - tosin ihan jäissä, haha!

Now that I have showed you few of my favorite pieces from the collection, I think I can move on to the event itself. When arriving to the lobby, I was totally surprised when Heidi Klum stepped out of the elevator looking very pretty and joking with people around. She looked stunning in her white shirt that had golden studs! So funny to think that I was standing right next to her - completely frozen, haha!

Show-paikalle yläkertaan päästessäni koin seuraavan ihanan positiivisen yllätyksen kun nimilistassa nimeni perässä luki "blogger". Kuulostaa ehkä hassulta, mutta mä tulin tosi onnelliseksi tosta! ...Mulle tosin neuvottiin aika kehno seisomapaikka, kunnes koin illan kolmannen yllätyksen; joku henkilökunnasta saattoi minut valokuvaajien joukkoon eturiviin catwalkin päätyyn! Wow, yksi shown parhaimmista paikoista mielestäni ja olin ihan innoissani!

When I got upstairs where the show was held, I had my lovely second surprise when in the name-list there was "blogger" written after my name. It may sound silly, but I was really happy about that! ...I was advised to get a bad standing place, until I had my 3rd surprise; some staff person came to pick me up and took me to the front row in the end of the catwalk where I was with other photographers! Wow, one of the best places in that show, and I was super excited!

Niinkuin aiemin kerrottu jo, mallistossa oli tosi paljon ihania vaatteita - varsinkin takit olivat mun mieleen! Kaikki vaatteet olivat mielestäni todella Ivana Helsingin näköisiä, skandinaavisia ja värikkäitä.

Like I told you before, the collection had lots of lovely clothes - especially all the jackets were super cool! I think all the clothes looked very much like Ivana Helsinki, scandinavian and colorful. 

Kännykkä kuitenkin värisi taskussa viisi kertaa näytöksen aikana lähettäen mulle hälytysviestejä lähestyvästä super-myrskystä, joten päätin jättää after partyt varulta väliin ja lähdin suunnistamaan kotia kohti. Todella onnistunut ilta!

My cellphone was vibrating in my pocket five times during the show sending me emergency alerts because of the super-storm, so I decided to skip the after party and headed back home, just in case. The evening was a success!

Seuraavat pari päivää tullaan viettämään sisätiloissa Nemo-myrskyn vallatessa itärannikon, joten tämähän on ihan täydellinen aika bloggailulle! Tosiaan eilinen Ivana Helsinki F/W 2013/14 näytös oli mielestäni upea ja siellä oli monia vaatekappaleita, jotka mielelläni haluaisin omaan käyttööni pian! Poimin teille muutamia lemppareitani:
